Molehill with Mole 2021

A mole emerges from its earthwork—half-surfaced, caught between underground and above. Cast in bronze, the sculpture gives heroic status to what gardens wage war against: the blind navigator of darkness, tireless digger, creature of soil and shadow living entirely out of sight.

What appears uninvited on pristine lawns, what gets poisoned and trapped despite aerating soil and controlling pests, now receives permanent monument. The humble molehill—sign of unwanted presence—becomes sculpture worth placing on that same contested grass.

A pop-up work in both senses: the mole surfacing from below, and the sculpture appearing where least expected. The flowing bronze base suggests freshly turned earth, the accumulation of industrious excavation. The patinated surface creates subtle variations—darker shadows in crevices, lighter highlights catching on the mole’s back.

Soft, determined, criminally underappreciated. The sculpture celebrates hidden labor, lives lived beneath notice, the beauty of what exists just below the surface and gets no credit for it.
